Per Darren Dregger the return is
Staal to NYR for two 2nd round picks and prospect Saarela.

It's not Pavel Buchnevich, Brady Skjei or Robin Kovacs, but Saarela is a player who had just started coming into his own in Liiga, dominated the world juniors and is a guy who has all the tools to be a really special player. In a situation where the Rangers didn't need to make a move and Gorton had all the leverage, I'm less than thrilled with giving up a prospect of his caliber.
Staal has already been pulled from the Carolina lineup, and Carolina is expected to retain 50% of his cap hit to make things work.
