Game #61: San Jose Sharks vs New York Rangers Open Thread
After finishing off a season sweep of the Carolina Hurricanes last night, the Rangers are back in action 24 hours later against Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau, and the rest of the San Jose Sharks. Tonight’s contest could mark the end of an era in Rangerstown, as the Rangers will be off for the next two days as they watch the trade deadline come and go.
While the previous two seasons have seen the Blueshirts sit their trade chips to avoid any risk of injury, the team’s recent play has thrown them back into the periphery of the playoff picture. Six wins in the last seven games have propelled the Rangers within shouting distance of the Wild Card spots in the Eastern Conference, and David Quinn has stated that his squad won’t be resting any key players ahead of the trade deadline.
Player to Watch: Chris Kreider
Of all the players possibly putting on a Rangers’ sweater for the final time, Kreider appears to be the most likely of the bunch. As the premier rental forward on the trade market, the Rangers are likely land a significant haul of picks and prospects should they opt to trade Kreider rather than sign him to a contract extension. After bursting onto the scene against the Ottawa Senators during the 2012 playoffs, Kreider will be playing in his 597th game as a Ranger tonight. It could very well be his last, so keep an eye on Kreider tonight.
Enjoy the game!
