He was not only a friend, but a mentor and a teacher. He was, personally, one of my biggest resources of support when I moved into this career.
Rest in peace, @AlTrautwig. š pic.twitter.com/E1z3pxS2gm
Trautwig, a home grown New Yorker and lifelong sports fan, had worked in sports broadcasting since the 80s. Starting as a stick boy for the New York Islanders, he worked his way into essential and iconic roles for various television stations. For some time, he was synonymous with NHL hockey, helping grow the sport in the United States by lending his voice and talents to coverage over the years from stations such as Versus to USA Network, but Trautwig's voice extended far beyond the sport of hockey, often providing coverage for the Olympics, Strong Man competitions, or professional cycling.
Al Trautwig won multiple Emmys throughout his life and had a passion and unique approach to his coverage of sports. Most of you will remember him from his pregame coverage for the Knicks and Rangers. His sports knowledge was vast, and you could always trust the facts or tidbits you'd get from him when critically discussing the game. Trautwig took a leave of absence from MSG, and amidst the pandemic, they did not renew his contract.
He's been out of the limelight for the last couple of years, struggling with his health. Trautwig has been and will continue to be missed by sports fans all over, regardless of the sport or team they follow, and that's a testament to his ability to engage his audience. May he rest in peace.
His legacy will live on in the memories we hold and continue to remember. Share your favorite memories or moments of Trautwig's sports coverage below.
