Blueshirts By the Numbers: Number 5 - Barry Beck

It took five players to bring Barry Beck to the Rangers on November 2, 1979, which is ironic because it may have taken five men to bring him down.

Barry was just 22 when he came to the Rangers, and would spend seven seasons on Broadway before the many injuries he suffered over the years took their toll and forced "Bubba" into retirement following the 1985-86 season.

At 6'3", 215 lbs, Beck isn't the biggest player to ever play for the Rangers, but you would be hard pressed to find a tougher guy to ever wear the Blueshirt. As Eddie would say, Beck was "one tough hombre".

A vicious, vicious hitter, Barry was the intimidating defenseman the Rangers have rarely had. But Barry could put the puck in the net as well, scoring 66 goals and 173 assists while playing in New York. Beck also wasn't afraid to drop the gloves, as you will see in the terrific tribute video from Jocco1969 on You Tube. Watching the video will also remind you of the days when the Rangers and Islanders used to have a rivalry.

Beck was also a three time all star, and just like our selections at Numbers 2, 3, and 4, Barry wore the "C" for the Rangers. Beck served as Captain from 1981 to 1986.

Barry now lives in Hong Kong where he coaches with the Hong Kong Academy of Ice Hockey.
