BREAKING: Jeff Gorton and John Davidson Fired
For all of the chaos that has surrounded the Rangers during this COVID-shortened season, today’s news takes the cake in the unexpected department. With three games to go in yet another season without playoff hockey, general manager Jeff Gorton and President of Hockey Operations John Davidson have reportedly been fired, as per Larry Brooks and later confirmed by other sources:
BREAKING. Shocker. Rangers have fired John Davidson and Jeff Gorton, Post has learned. Chris Drury will remain with organization and will have prominent role.

Given the sudden nature of the firing, it’s a wonder if this was due to the team’s performance, as a firing after the season would be the more logical remedy to that. However, team owner James Dolan appears to have opted for that change now:
I’m told the firing of Gorton and Davidson by NYR is coincidental and not related to the statement issued yesterday related to Tom Wilson. Another source says ownership felt the Rangers underachieved this season.

However, there is word Dolan was unhappy with this NYR season and wanted to make a change. Seems crazy to me, because they have a come a long, long way in two years...but he’s the owner.

James Dolan usually doesn’t interfere with the Rangers, but that appears to be the case for today. However, the owner felt that the time had come for him to step in and make a decision. As the situation evolves, Blueshirt Banter will relay any updates.
