Chris Drury named GM of Team USA
The former captain will be tasked with putting together a team that can win a medal at the 2020 Worlds in Switzerland
Today USA Hockey announced that New York Rangers assistant general manager Chris Drury will be the general manager of the United States’ men’s national team for the 2020 IIHF World Championship. This year’s tournament is being held in Switzerland and will span from May 8-24.
Drury, who served as part of the management group for U.S. Men’s National Teams in both 2016 and 2017, was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 after a 12-year NHL career that included a Stanley Cup championship with the Colorado Avalanche in 2001.
“Anytime you have a chance to represent your country on the international stage – in whatever capacity – it’s truly an honor,” said Drury. “We had a terrific team last year, and while we didn’t get the result we wanted, I think we’re on the cusp of getting to that ultimate goal of winning the gold medal. I’m looking forward to working with the men’s national team advisory group in putting together a roster and staff that will represent our country well.”
In addition to serving as the assistant general manager of the Rangers, Drury is also the general manager of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. Team USA finished in 7th place in the 2019 IIHF Worlds and has won bronze in three of last seven tournaments with its most recent medal coming in 2018.
