New York Rangers News: Adios, Carcillo--agitator inks PTO with Pittsburgh
Daniel Carcillo's tenure as a Ranger official came to an end on Thursday when he signed a PTO with the Penguins.
The Rangers don't have much work left to do in the way of roster moves this summer, and one potential returner is now out of the picture, as Daniel Carcillo signed on a professional tryout on Thursday with Pittsburgh. Carcillo continues his tour of Metropolitan Division rivals, having gone from the Flyers, to the Rangers, and now the Penguins.
Carcillo was acquired by New York last season after an injury to Derek Dorsett left a hole on the Rangers fourth line. While the move was certainly maligned when it was made, Carcillo was pleasantly productive during his New York tenure, scoring three goals in the 31 regular season games he appeared in, including the game-winning goal in the second Stadium Series game against the Islanders.
After Dorsett was healthy enough to play, the chemistry Carcillo had built next to Dominic Moore and Brian Boyle kept him in the lineup, even in the postseason. In those playoffs, Carcillo scored twice in the eight games he skated in, both coming against the Flyers, and one of those in the decisive Game 7. Heck, he even created a great memory with this goal celebration in Philadelphia.
His stint as a Ranger unofficially came to an end when Carcillo made contact with an official during Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Canadiens, drawing a match penalty, and subsequently a 10-game suspension. Through an appeal, that ban was reduced to six games, and Carcillo sat out the final two tilts of the series against the Kings despite being eligible to play.
With the Rangers right up against the 50 contract limit, the likelihood that Carcillo was going to be brought back was dwindling, especially with the team still needing to sign defenseman John Moore. It's pretty unclear whether or not Carcillo will actually see time for the Penguins coming in on a PTO, but with his suspension served, he would be immediately eligible to play.
A promotion for Fogarty
Steven Fogarty was drafted by the Rangers in 2011 by the New York Rangers, and is learning a pro-style game at Notre Dame. On Wednesday, the junior was named Notre Dame's captain for the upcoming season. With a number of departures up front for the Fighting Irish, Fogarty figures to be a bigger part of Notre Dame's offensive scheme in his third collegiate season, around the time many college players make offensive jumps.
