Ryan McDonagh and Kevin Shattenkirk Are Stanley Cup Champions

On Monday evening the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Dallas Stars 2-0 in Game Six to become the 2019-20 Stanley Cup Champions. The Lightning finished the playoffs with a record of 18-7 — 16-6 outside the round robin — and never lost back-to-back games.

A number of players won the Stanley Cup for the first time, Patrick Maroon the only player who had previously captured a championship, and the list includes former Rangers Ryan McDonagh and Kevin Shattenkirk.

McDonagh joined the Lightning on February 26, 2018 along with J.T. Miller in a deal that sent Libor Hajek, Brett Howden, and Vlad Namestnikov the other way along with a 2018 first rounder used on Nils Lundkvist, and a conditional 2019 second round pick which became Karl Henriksson.

Shattenkirk joined the Lightning this summer after the Rangers bought out the last two years of his four-year, $22.6 million contract that carried a $6.65 million AAV. As such, he counts $6,083,000 against the Rangers’ cap in 2020-21, and $1,433,333 in 2021-22 and 2022-23.

In 25 games, Shattenkirk scored 3 goals and added 10 assists for 13 points, finishing 2nd in scoring among Lightning defensemen, and 7th for the total team. McDonagh tallied a goal and four assists in 22 games.

At 5v5, McDonagh posted a line that included a 57.90 CF%, and an xGF% of 56.54. Shattenkirk posted a 55.91 CF%, and a 60.06 xGF% in the games he appeared according to Natural Stat Trick. Both are different defenders in nature, but played a pivotal role in helping the Lightning win their first Stanley Cup since the 2003-04 season.

Congratulations to McDonagh and Shattenkirk on their Stanley Cup win, it is well deserved for two incredible players and human beings.
