Game #52: New York Rangers vs Chicago Blackhawks Open Thread
The Blueshirts are back in action for an Original Six clash in the Windy City tonight. The United Center is the destination as Peter Laviolette’s squad pays a visit to the lowly Chicago Blackhawks. The Rangers took the first meeting of the season between these two teams, a 4-1 victory in Manhattan on January 4th, and now will look to complete a sweep of the season series.
Featuring a roster that was already mostly devoid of talent when the season began, the Blackhawks will be without Connor Bedard in this contest. After skating against the Blueshirts in the previous matchup, Bedard suffered a broken jaw on a hit from former Ranger Brendan Smith the following night against the New Jersey Devils, and has been out of the lineup ever since. The results have been predictable as Chicago currently sits dead last in the league wide standings with an ugly 14-35-2 record, and the Rangers will look to make that mark a little bit uglier.
Player to Watch: Artemiy Panarin
Tonight marks the latest return to where Panarin’s career in North America began. The Russian superstar’s first NHL game came on opening night in 2015 against the Rangers as a member of the Blackhawks, and Panarin scored his first NHL goal on a night where the Rangers spoiled Chicago’s banner raising celebration. Panarin would spend two years in Chicago and another two in Columbus before making his way to Broadway, and has now been a Ranger for more seasons than he has not. Keep an eye on Panarin as he skates against his former team.
Enjoy the game!
