Game #6: New York Rangers vs Calgary Flames Open Thread
The Blueshirts have crossed the border for the first time this season. After picking up a road win in Seattle three nights ago, Peter Laviolette’s squad has made its way into Alberta to renew an old Patrick Division rivalry with the Calgary Flames. The Rangers and Flames spent most of their time as division rivals in New York and Atlanta respectively, but the 1980-81 campaign, Calgary’s first after moving from Atlanta, saw the Flames stick out like a sore thumb in Patrick Division featuring the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers, and Capitals.
As for tonight’s contest, it will be one of the last games of the NHL’s “Frozen Frenzy”. All 32 teams are in action today, with staggered start times ranging from 6 PM EDT in Toronto to an otherwise unheard of 11 PM EDT puck drop in Las Vegas. The Frozen Frenzy is the reason for tonight’s unusual 9:45 PM EDT start time between the Rangers and Flames on what would otherwise be 45 minutes earlier.
Player to Watch: Adam Fox
A third round draft pick by the Calgary Flames in 2016, the Flames traded Fox’s contract rights to the Carolina Hurricanes following his sophomore season at Harvard. Fox made his way to the Rangers via a trade from Carolina to New York following his junior season. Since then, Fox has emerged as one of the league’s top defenseman, winning a Norris Trophy in 2021 and finishing as the runner up last season. Keep an eye on Fox as he looks to come up big against the team that drafted him.
Enjoy the game!
