That is the most money ever handed out - in AAV and total dollars - to an NHL goaltender on his second contract.
This contract buys out two of Igor’s RFA years and two of his UFA years, keeping the Russian netminder in Manhattan for at least the next four years. Last season, Shesterkin appeared in 35 games, with 16 wins and a .916 Sv% and for his short NHL career, Igor has 26 wins and a .921 Sv%.
While Shesterkin’s extension is a record-setter as the largest 2nd contract ever handed out to an NHL goalie, the Russian goalie’s body of work so far more than stands up for itself and falls well within the salary he agreed to.
Shesterkin's statistical profile (NHL data only) using past results, workload, and age projects to a market value of ~$5.5M in 2021-22. once you account for everything else (including term across mid-late 20s seasons) then I don't see what the issue is https://t.co/E0UR6gIOOe
