The 34-year-old signed with the Blueshirts last July to a one-year, $1.15 million contract after Pittsburgh bought out the final two years of his last deal. He played 13 games this season, where he averaged 16:58 minutes of ice time, and earned one point. His only goal of the season was scored in the last game he played on March 9th, which was a 4-2 loss against his previous team, the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Last Monday, Johnson cleared waivers before being assigned to the taxi squad.

According to The New York Post’s Larry Brooks, Johnson will continue to be on the taxi squad which means “the Rangers will only be charged a (prorated) cap hit of $75,000 with an AHL allowance of $1.075 million on his $1.15million salary.”
He is expected to make a full recovery from the core-muscle surgery and will become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
