Jeff Malcolm Promoted to Rangers Goalie Coach
It was previously announced that Rangers Director of Goaltending Benoit Allaire would be taking a step back and no longer working with the team on a day-to-day basis, and those duties now belong to Jeff Malcolm. Malcolm was most recently the goalie coach of the Hartford Wolf Pack, and also spent time as a consultant working for the Rangers with Allaire.
Replacing Malcolm in Hartford is Brendan Burke, who most recently worked with the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL.
With an established starter in Igor Shesterkin, and a future Hall of Fame backup in Jonathan Quick, Malcolm won't have a lot of work to do immediately. He's been working with Allaire in recent years, so the immediate transition hopefully will be smooth.
Things will get interesting in the future once someone like Dylan Garand is in the picture, or another unknown goalie who could serve as a backup in the future. Allaire deservedly gets a lot of praise and acclaim for his work with Henrik Lundqvist, but it's fair to say that his work with backups like Cam Talbot, Antti Raanta, Alexandar Georgiev, and recently Quick, is something that was equally important to the franchise.
In any case, it will be different for the Rangers not having Allaire around as much, and here's to hoping goaltending can continue to be a relative organizational strength for the Blueshirts.
