The Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is an annual award where each of the league’s 32 teams nominate a player “who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.” The nominees from each team are selected by The Professional Hockey Writers Association and is often awarded to a player with either a big comeback story or has followed a journeyman sort of path to get into the position they’re in.

This year, the New York Rangers portion of the PHWA has nominated Jonny Brodzisnki for this honor.

Originally a fifth round pick in 2013, Bordiznski bounced around the Kings and Sharks organizations before settling down with the New York Rangers. After initially joining the team in 2020, Brodzinski eventually became the Captain of the Hartford Wolf Pack and was a frequent call up for the Rangers. Since then, Brodzinski has shifted into a more permanent role with the Rangers, playing a utility type of role mainly in the bottom six.

In 46 games played this season, Brodzinski has registered 10 goals and 7 assists for a total of 17 points. More notably, he is one of the few players on this roster who noticeably gives 100% effort on a nightly basis which speaks volumes given how this season is gone.

While a full list hasn’t officially been released yet, additional nominees include Sean Monahan, Ryan Suter, John Tavares, Jesper Boqvist, David Perron, Jason Zucker and Justin Kirkland. Jonathan Quick was last season's nominee for the Rangers but it was another goaltender who went on to win the award in Utah’s Connor Ingram.

A well-deserved nod for Jonny Brodzinski who has really gone above and beyond to get to this position with the Rangers.
