Rangers Agree To Terms With Cody McLeod on One-Year, $750K Deal

After opting to stay away from chasing big names during the first wave of free agency, Jeff Gorton and the Rangers’ management team have been browsing the bargain bin. As it turns out, they didn’t need to look for very long to find what they were looking for:

According to Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post, the deal is worth $750,000.

After being claimed off waivers from the Nashville Predators on January 25th, Mcleod appeared in 25 games for the Rangers down the stretch as the team began their fire sale. McLeod failed to find the back of the net during his time in New York and only notched two assists, but he did drop the mitts seven times and take an additional two minor penalties en route to racking up 39 PIM’s.

Just as Alain Vigneault had Tanner Glass, McLeod will fit the bill as David Quinn’s enforcer of choice. Considering the logjam of forwards the Blueshirts already had in their bottom six, adding another body into the mix is a head scratching move. It’d be one thing if McLeod was a serviceable, but that hasn’t been the case in recent years:

Contract terms are yet to be disclosed, but the signing makes no sense regardless of how much money the Rangers will be paying McLeod. If he’s in the NHL, McLeod will be taking a roster spot away from a veteran forward that could be more useful as a spare forward, or taking away ice time from a player who wouldn’t actively harm the team. Even if he’s in the AHL, McLeod is just a phone call and a drive away from being back on Broadway.
