New York Rangers Announce Prospect Development Camp Roster

The list includes 37 names which is a mix of top prospects, former draftees, and some free agent invites.

New York Rangers’ prospect development camp starts tomorrow, and the roster was released this morning. The group includes the 2019 draft class highlighted by Kaapo Kakko, top prospects like Igor Shesterkin, Vitali Kravtsov, K’Andre Miller, Adam Fox, Nils Lundkvist, and Yegor Rykov, and other past Ranger draftees like Joey Keane, Tarmo Reunanen, and so on.

It also includes a handful of free agent invites including Ty Amonte (Boston University), Tarek Baker (University of Wisconsin), Michael Gildon (US U18 Team), Brett Kemp (Medicine Hat), Max Johnson (Bowling Green), Nolan Moyle (University of Michigan), and Alex Whelan (Quinnipiac).

Amonte is 21, and the son of former Ranger Tony Amonte. He’s coming of a season which saw him tally eight goals, and eight assists for 16 points in 37 games.

Baker, 22, just finished his second season with the Badgers, and tallied 20 points (seven goals, and 13 assists) in 37 games. He’s a left handed winger who stands 5’9”, and weighs 183 pounds.

Gildon was eligible for the 2019 draft, but was not selected. He was ranked as high as No. 73 by McKeen’s Hockey, No. 79 by Elite Prospects and No. 84 in The Athletic. The 6’2”, 194-pound left winger turned 18 on June 21, and tallied 45 points in 61 games this season. He’s someone to keep an eye on, and could be a way the Rangers bolster the prospect pool without actually giving up a pick.

Kemp was eligible for the draft this year, and was ranked as high as No. 171 among North American skaters by central scouting. This season he recorded 60 points in 64 games split between the Edmonton Oil Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers. He’s a 6’1”, 161-pound center, and turned 19 this past March.

Johnson is an interesting invite as the 21-year-old pivot has put together two solid seasons at Bowling Green. This past season he tallied 43 points in 41 games, an improvement on the 30 points he recorded in the same amount of games played the year before. He’s average sized at 5’10” and 183 pounds, and it will be interesting to see how it looks among the team’s top prospects.

Moyle turns 20 in September, and will enter his sophomore season at Michigan. The Briarcliff Manor native had 10 points in his rookie season, which was a drop off from the 45 points he tallied in 57 games with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL.

Whelan turns 22 in July, and is slated to be a senior for Quinnipiac in the fall. He skated in 35 games last year and scored 13 goals, while adding 12 assists for 25 points. He stands 6’0”, and 212 pounds and could be someone just to round out the roster.

Overall this development camp is just a week long, and it involves many different players moving around different lines to find something that fits. The roster should be one of the more exciting ones in years, because it is a combination of recent picks, top prospects, and some interesting invites who have some upside.
