With reports floating around that Marc Staal was closing in on a brand new six-year contract extension, the Rangers are expected to officially announce the deal later today.
Over the last few days, reports have been flying around about Marc Staal and the New York Rangers closing in on a brand new six-year contract extension. At the time, the deal was not officially signed, but based on the reports there was a mutual agreement in place to keep the defenseman in New York for the next six seasons.
According to Larry Brooks, the Rangers are scheduled to officially announce Staal's new contract following today's matinee against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Just as the previous reports alluded to, Staal's new deal will pay him $5.7 million annually over the next six seasons, which is a decent uptick from the $3.975 million he is currently making. With Staal now locked up for the foreseeable future, the Rangers financial flexibility has taken quite a hit with another big summer of free agents on the horizon.
The Rangers will now have some big decisions to make this upcoming summer as Derek Stepan, Mats Zuccarello, Martin St. Louis, and Carl Hagelin are all due for new contracts. Staal's new contract may cause one of the four to depart New York at the season's end, but sometimes that's just the way it goes in a cap environment.
