New York Rangers News: Rangers Acquire Nick Holden From Colorado

After a completely noiseless draft in terms of trades, the New York Rangers finally made a move and brought in a defenseman. According to an official team release, the New York Rangers have acquired Nick Holden from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a 4th-round draft pick in 2017.

In terms of the Rangers plans heading into the offseason, this move is a bit of a head-scratcher, but there may be more to this. Holden is set to make $1.65 million for the next two seasons, and is a left handed defenseman, which means it’s safe to assume he will be on the roster next season.

Now here is where it may get interesting. Could the Rangers potentially be moving on from someone like Marc Staal to create much needed cap space, and they view Holden as a cheap alternative? Obviously this is just pure speculation at the moment, but you can probably see where this is going.

The Rangers are committed to shedding cap space heading into next season, and they just added a $1.65 million player for a draft pick. It’s something to keep an eye on moving into the free agent period.
