New York Rangers News: Rangers Sign Robin Kovacs To Entry-Level Contract
Following up a trio of signings earlier in the morning, the New York Rangers have reportedly made their fourth signing of the day. According to a report from CapFriendly, the Rangers have signed prospect Robin Kovacs to a three-year entry-level contract. The deal is set to pay Kovacs $803,333 over a three year span, and it also includes games played bonuses.
Kovacs was a third-round pick of the Rangers in 2015, and is coming off a rather impressive season in the Swedish Hockey League. As a 19-year-old, Kovacs tallied 21 goals, 13 assists, and 34 points in 44 total games played. Earlier on in the summer there were rumors of the Rangers trying to bring Kovacs over, after he was expected to spend another season overseas.
With the Rangers in desperate need of skilled and cheap youth, the time couldn’t be better for Kovacs to come to North America. Given the transition period, Kovacs will likely start off the year in the American Hockey League, where he will jump on board with AIK teammate Malte Stromwall.
Thus far, the Rangers have had an extremely good offseason in terms of cheap additions, and Kovacs is another added to the list. Obviously there still work to be done on the backend, but the Rangers may have backed themselves into a corner by waiting just a little too long.
