New York Rangers News: Raphael Diaz And Jayson Megna Clear Waivers
Both Raphael Diaz and Jayson Megna cleared waivers this afternoon, and have been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack.
The New York Rangers announced their final roster cuts yesterday and as a result, both Raphael Diaz and Jayson Megna were placed on waivers for the purpose of assignment. In a surprising turn of events, both Diaz and Megna cleared waivers at noon and have been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.
The surprise is directed more at Diaz than it is Megna, mainly because so many teams are looking for some extra defensive depth due to recent injuries (i.e: Boston Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, etc). Once he hit the waiver wire, it was almost expected that he would be claimed given his abilities and a very reasonable one-year contract. So as of right now, Diaz will remain with the Rangers but we will have to wait and see if he accepts his AHL assignment.
Right after news broke yesterday, swisshockeynews.ch published an article stating that Diaz would rather return to Europe than report to the Wolf Pack. While that is obviously the worst case scenario, we will have to see if the Rangers have a plan in place for him in the event that they make a move in the coming days.
Could he be a call up option if the Rangers find a taker for Kevin Klein? It's hard to tell, but given the recent moves, anything is really possible at this point.
Thoughts?
