New York Rangers Quarter-Season Report Cards: Forwards
We've officially reached the quarter-season mark in the National Hockey League, so let's take stock of where the New York Rangers are and how each member of the team has performed so far this season.
The Rangers currently sit at 12-6-1, good for 25 points and 4th place in the Metropolitan Division, behind the division-leading New Jersey Devils (30pts), Carolina Hurricanes (29pts), and the Washington Capitals (27pts), with the Rangers having games in-hand on all of them. If the season ended today, they'd be in the playoffs as the first wildcard team.
The first 19 games have been a rollercoaster. Out of the gate, the Rangers were, to the surprise of most, rolling at 5v5. The Cuylle-Chytil-Kakko line was dominant, with Panarin-Trocheck-Lafrenière right behind them. Was the goaltending elite? Well, these are the Rangers we're talking about. Igor Shesterkin, with questions looming about a potential record-breaking contract extension on the horizon, was on a tear. Not to be outdone, Jonathan Quick was putting up insanely good numbers in the backup role. The questions coming into the season mostly remained: can Mika Zibanejad find his game? Can Jacob Trouba and Ryan Lindgren adequately defend? Can the team find consistency without constantly being bailed out by their netminders?
Now, coming off a 2-2 west coast road trip that saw them drop back-to-back games against the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers in which they were outshot by a combined total of 41-13 in the first periods, they've returned home to face the St. Louis Blues and start the second quarter of the season.
Today, we'll take a look at the Rangers forwards. On Wednesday, we'll look at the defensemen, goaltenders, and head coach.
So how have the Rangers forwards graded out so far? Here we go.
