Rangers vs Maple Leafs: Ryan Strome Scores OT Winner as Rangers Steal Win in Toronto
The New York Rangers finally snapped their five-game losing streak, and it came on a night where they were “officially” eliminated from playoff contention. Alexandar Georgiev turned aside 44 shots on the night as he had another strong outing against Toronto, and stole this win for New York. Ryan Strome scored the overtime winner just 1:48 into the extra period and picked up his 15th goal of the season.
1-0 Rangers
Pavel Buchnevich (18) - Brady Skjei (16) & Kevin Shattenkirk (25) - 0:19 3rd Period
It took until the third period for the first goal to be scored, and it was the Rangers who came away with the goal. Brady Skjei’s shot from the goal line created chaos in front of the Maple Leafs net, and after a battle for the puck, Pavel Buchnevich came out on the other side of the pile. Buchnevich quickly transitioned to his forehand and ripped a shot past Frederik Andersen.
1-1 Tie
Zach Hyman (19) - John Tavares (41) & Mitch Marner (62) - 8:33 3rd Period
Up until the 8:33 mark of the third period, Georgiev looked well on his way to a shutout but Zach Hyman’s 19th of the season ended that bid. John Tavares created the entire goal after collecting a rebound in the high slot, and tossed a no-look pass back over to Zach Hyman who was wide open. Georgiev was still searching for the puck after the pass, and Hyman buried the puck on the empty net to tie the game.
2-1 Rangers
Ryan Strome (15) - Boo Nieves (6) - 1:48 Overtime
The Rangers had a combined 1-9 record in the 3-on-3 overtime period this season, but they found a way to make quick work of the Leafs this time around. Just 1:48 into overtime, Boo Nieves and Ryan Strome connected behind the net for the game winning goal. Frederik Andersen made an incredible save just seconds prior, but was unable to get back to his crease and deny the chance by Strome.
Following tonight’s overtime victory, the Rangers will have a scheduled off day tomorrow before returning to action on Monday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
