The New York Rangers have made a significant commitment to their back end, announcing today that they have signed defenseman Will Borgen to a five-year, $20.5 million contract extension. The deal carries an AAV of $4.1 million, signaling the organization’s confidence in the 27-year-old blueliner in their defensive core moving forward.

The contract includes a full no-movement clause through the remainder of the 2024-25 season. Following that, the agreement transitions to a modified no-trade clause for the duration of the contract.

The trade does raise questions about General Manager Chris Drury's view on the season to this point and what he intends to do at the trade deadline. After an extended period of poor play that saw them lose 15 out of 19 games, and that saw captain Jacob Trouba traded and Chris Kreider put on the trade block, Rangers have now picked up points in their last 10 games, putting them just a point out of the playoffs. Borgen, who was acquired from the Seattle Kraken in the Kaapo Kakko trade in December, was rumored to have the potential to bring back a high draft pick if he were to be traded at the deadline.

In his first 17 games with the team, he recorded one goal and two assist, along with 29 blocked shots and 30 hits and averaged 18:35 of ice time.
