Official: Rangers Sign Jacob Trouba To Contract Extension

The salary arbitration hearing between Jacob Trouba and the New York Rangers scheduled for July 25 will no longer be necessary. Today, Trouba pledged his future to his new team by signing a seven-year deal worth an average annual value of $8,000,000. This is the first long-term contract of his career.

The cap hit for Trouba’s extension was initially projected to be in the neighborhood of $7.5 million by Larry Brooks and $6.87 million (for a seven-year term) by the Evolving Wild Twins.

The 25-year-old defenseman was the ninth overall pick of the 2012 Draft. In his six years in the NHL, Trouba has established himself as one of the best young right-side defenseman in the game. All signs point to him being the foundation of the Rangers’ blue line for years to come.

Trouba is fresh off a career year with the Jets in which he tallied 50 points — eight goals and 42 assists — in 82 games. Of his 50 points, 29 points came at even strength, and that type of production will be of great value to the Blueshirts.

With Trouba signed, Pavel Buchnevich is the only Ranger remaining with an arbitration hearing. Buchnevich, his representation, and the Rangers will meet in court on July 29 unless an agreement is reached beforehand. In addition to Buchnevich, the Rangers have three more restricted free agents who need new deals: Tony DeAngelo, Brendan Lemieux, and Vinni Lettieri.
