NHL Network ranks Lundqvist as 8th best goaltender
The NHL Network just released its list of the “Top 10 Goalies Right Now” and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers came in at eighth, between Cam Talbot and Martin Jones.
The full Top 10:
Carey Price, Montreal Canadiens
Braden Holtby, Washington Capitals
Sergei Bobrovsky, Columbus Blue Jackets
Matt Murray, Pittsburgh Penguins
Devan Dubnyk, Minnesota Wild
Jonathan Quick, Los Angeles Kings
Cam Talbot, Edmonton Oilers
Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers
Martin Jones, San Jose Sharks
Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators
Needless to say there are a few surprises on the list. Last summer NHL Network ranked Lundqvist as the 28th best player in the league “right now” between Shea Weber and Patrice Bergeron. Clearly Lundqvist’s underwhelming 2016-17 regular season and advancing age has moved him down the ladder in the eyes of many.
Hank’s stock might be dropping, but he is still one of the best in the league at his position. NHL Network analyst and former Rangers goaltender Kevin Weekes gushed about Lundqvist’s career in New York.
“He certainly is the complete package,” Weekes said. “He is destined to a ticket on the corner of Young and Front Street in Toronto that is known as the Hockey Hall of Fame.”
All eyes will be on how Lundqvist starts the 2017-18 season with Antti Raanta in Arizona and Ondrej Pavelec as the Rangers new backup.
On August 13th NHL Network will release its list of the top 10 wingers in hockey and on the 20th the coverage will shift to the league’s best centers. The Rangers are unlikely to have players who appear on either of those lists.
