A quick glance at this roster reveals that there really aren’t any surprises or out of nowhere PTOs, which makes sense given the makeup of the roster. While there’s obviously room for improvement down the middle, specifically within the top-six, you likely aren’t going to find a player who fits the bill on a professional tryout.
This is a preliminary roster, and one that will become smaller as camp progresses. The team’s first preseason game is on Sunday, September 26, and they will play again on September 28, October 1, October 2, October 6, and one final time on October 9.
It will be interesting to see how the bottom-six shakes out and if there’s a prospect or two who hangs around long enough to make a push to make the opening night roster. Morgan Barron is a strong candidate in that regard. Then there’s the defense, specifically the third pair, and a job on the right side that is expected to be filled by Nils Lundkvist. But there will be others like Zac Jones, Braden Schneider, and assorted others in camp trying to beat him out for that job.
If nothing else, it will be interesting to see how Gerard Gallant approaches camp, and what he looks to try in the preseason. It is fair to say that there’s a good sense of the majority of this roster and where they likely will play, but none of that matters once the players hit the ice and show what kind of condition they are in.
