Open Game Thread: Rangers vs. Flyers
The Blueshirts hit MSG ice for the first time this fall in a preseason matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers. Monday’s two-goal scorer Lias Andersson is sitting this one out, but anointed saint Pavel Buchnevich will be back. Tonight will test the mettle of another round of new kids, returning teen phenom Filip Chytil, and Brendan Smith, who, while not new, has a lot to prove after a disastrous last season. Henrik Lundqvist and Dustin Tokarski (I still can’t quite get over this for some reason) will be splitting the time in net. We’ll update with lines when available.

Keep an eye on the defense, who, should we actually get to see some sustained 5 on 5 this time, will be playing a new system. Unlike that of Alain Vigneault, this approach actually seems designed to help the Rangers to score goals while also — get this — preventing the other team from doing so. See Larry Brooks’ account of David Quinn’s early impact here, and tune in Saturday for Joe’s response!
