Pregame: Riveters at the Whale, 2/28
Playoff spots are set, but the Riveters have one more chance to boost their regular season record against the second-place Whale
Unless the Riveters upset the Pride in the playoffs, tonight at 6 pm will be the last time they meet the Connecticut Whale, who are in second place with a 12-5 record. They are also the only team that the Rivs have not beaten at least once this season. The Whale, who lost their last two games, will no doubt be looking to end the regular season with a win on home ice.
The Riveters will need to give everything they've got to protect Nana Fujimoto, whose excellent play last week was not enough to ward off a Buffalo squad bent on revenge. And in goal for the Whale will be Jaime Leonoff, who has the NWHL's best save percentage at .936. More Whales to watch for? The Kellies, Babstock and Stack, both of whom are top five in the league for points and assists.
On the red, white, and blue side, keep an eye on Janine Weber, due to hit net any second now, as well as Lyudmila Belyakova, whose golden hands have yet to show what they can really do. The Rivs will need to stay out of the box, move that puck, and get cleanly out of their own zone to have a chance to put those fins down.
Let's go Riveters!
