Preseason Game #2: New York Islanders vs New York Rangers Open Thread

After a Sunday night victory up in Boston to kick off the preseason slate, the Rangers have returned to Madison Square Garden for the second of their six glorified scrimmages. The New York Islanders are the opponent for tonight's tilt, as the Rangers use their in-state rivals as the guinea pigs for another round of self-evaluation amidst battles for roster spots and line combinations.

The Blueshirts have already made their first large round of roster cuts, cutting 15 players on Sunday while also assigning goaltender Hugo Ollas to AHL Hartford on Monday, leaving the roster at 47 players. A second sizable round of cuts can be expected following the game tonight or on Thursday, so tonight will once again represent the final time a handful of players pull on a Rangers sweater and take the ice this season.

Player to Watch: Brett Berard

When the Rangers opted to recall Matt Rempe and Adam Edstrom for forward depth down the stretch of last season, they were calls for Berard to be the one to earn an NHL shot, something that did not happen by the time the season came to a close. New York's fifth round selection in 2020, Berard is looking to force his way into the conversation for a roster spot. While an opening night spot is unlikely, Berard could be the guy to slot in if one of New York's high end skill players were to miss time, so he could find his way to Broadway at some point this season. Keep an eye on Berard tonight.

Enjoy the game!
