Rangers Assign Matt Rempe to Hartford Wolf Pack
Late last night, perhaps intentionally in attempts to avoid an outpour of attention to the matter, the Rangers made the decision to assign Matt Rempe to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL.
Throughout the Rangers' first seven games of the season, Rempe has only appeared in two of them, averaging just over five and a half minutes of ice time. As a result, Rempe certainly had limited time to try and stand out but frankly this decision has more to do with how good Adam Edström and Jonny Brodzinski have been on that fourth line with Sam Carrick. Brodzinski already has two points on the season in just five games played and Edström has been a part of all seven games thus far.
Rempe has taken Rangers nation by storm and this will undoubtedly disappoint a large portion of the fan base. However at the end of the day, this is in his best interest. Jimmy Vesey still has a few more games to go before he can return from IR and the Wolf Pack have an action-packed weekend ahead with games Friday and Sunday. Perhaps this is more about keeping Rempe active than it is a demotion.
Regardless of the reasoning, you'd rather see a 22 year-old seeing top line minutes in the AHL than spending most nights in the press box. If the Rangers don't have any intentions on making changes to the forward group as currently constructed, then this was undoubtedly the right call. It surely won't be the last the Rangers see of Rempe as it's a long season and they clearly value the player but for now, he'll continue to work on his game in the AHL.
