Rangers Claim Arthur Kaliyev Off Waivers From Kings

Yesterday, Blueshirt Banter wrote about it, and today, it shall be. We're just that powerful, folks.

All jokes aside, Chris Drury made an excellent pickup. Kaliyev was and continues to be a high-level prospect with an elite shot and a rare shoot-first mentality. If the Rangers were anticipating clearing house, at least partially, grabbing Kaliyev for free and giving him big minutes was a tremendous idea.

For various reasons, Kaliyev never got an extended shot at a full role with the Kings. Whether that was due to injury, personality quirks perceived by his coach, or being skipped over in the depth chart, he was a player like Kakko who could benefit from a scenery change. It was clear that Los Angeles wasn't sure what to do with him and didn't have the space for him on their roster, enter the New York Rangers. Having just shipped Kakko out, even on an unrelated note, this reclamation project takes some of that sting away. Seeing what a sniper like Kaliyev can do with a playmaker of Panarin's caliber is an idea even the most casual fan can dream about.

To make room for Kaliyev, the Rangers have also assigned Rempe back down to the Wolf Pack, which I'm sure will have half of you feeling a certain way. Although Rempe is a fan favorite, Kaliyev brings a lot more skill to the team.

We'll learn more about the Rangers' plan for Kaliyev when he joins the team. The trade deadline is inching closer, and this season feels over. Kaliyev getting the chance to prove his stuff down the stretch when there will likely be more than enough playing time to go around is a nice feather in Drury's cap, which has recently felt as if it has been plucked bare, so any plumage he can get his hands on is more than appreciated.
