Rangers Radar: DeAngelo’s Point Streak

DeAngelo is absolutely rolling right now

It’s time for another week of Blueshirt Banter’s Rangers Radar, where we put the spotlight on trends in performance and production and collect notes on players on the New York Rangers and the Hartford Wolf Pack, as well as Rangers prospects playing elsewhere.

New York Rangers

  • Defenseman Tony DeAngelo has points in eight-straight games, which is the longest point-scoring streak of his NHL career. All nine of the points that D’Angelo has picked up in this streak are assists and three of them have come on the power play.
  • Mika Zibanejad played 26:02 last night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. That’s just over 40 percent of the total ice time of the game. That’s a lot of hockey./
  • The three goals that Brady Skjei scored on Feb. 23 and Feb. 24 doubled his goal total this season. He now leads all Rangers blueliners in goals, with Neal Pionk right behind him with five in 54 games./
  • Chris Kreider hasn’t scored a power play goal since Dec. 29, 2018. The goal he scored in that game tied his career-best with seven power play goals in a season, set in 2014-15 and 2017-18. Kreider has now played in 25 games this season without scoring a power play goal.
  • On Feb. 24, Vladislav Namestnikov scored his first power play goal since March 12, 2018. He had a career-best seven power play goals in the 63 games he played with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season before being dealt to the Rangers.
  • Last night against the Lightning Jimmy Vesey posted his third-consecutive two-point game. The six points he’s notched in his last three games are more points than he had in the months of October or January this season. /

Hartford Wolf Pack

  • Steven Fogarty (72nd overall, 2011 Draft), who signed a one-year contract extension on trade deadline day, had a hat trick and an assist against the Providence Bruins on Feb. 24. Fogarty’s hatty included two shorthanded goals, giving him three total shorties on the season. His six-game point streak came to an end last night against the Hershey Bears./

Report: Rangers Sign Boo Nieves, Steven Fogarty To One-Year Extensions

  • Before Wednesday’s game, the Wolf Pack picked up points in six-consecutive games, three of which were wins in regulation. Hartford remains in last place in the Atlantic Division with 55 points in 58 games this season.
  • Undrafted winger Vinni Lettieri has points in eight-consecutive games with the Wolf Pack. In that span, Lettieri has registered 32 shots, including a 10-shot performance on Feb. 22 against the Springfield Thunderbirds.
  • After scoring his first career AHL goal on Feb. 17, Sean Day (81st overall, 2016 Draft) picked up his second career AHL goal on Feb. 22. Day now has five points in his last six games with Hartford.
  • Ty Ronning (201st overall, 2016 Draft) scored in his first game back with the Wolf Pack on Feb. 22 after being recalled from the Maine Mariners (ECHL). Ronning scored again on Feb. 23 against the Providence Bruins. He now has five goals in 24 career AHL games./

Other Rangers Prospects

  • Top prospect Vitali Kravtsov (9th overall, 2018 Draft) finished the 2018-19 KHL regular season with 21 points in 50 games for Traktor Chelyabinsk. Kravtsov finished third on Traktor in scoring despite missing 12 games this season. He also drew 12 penalties while taking just three minor penalties of his own (all situations).
  • Defenseman Yegor Rykov (132nd overall, 2016 Draft) finished the 2018-19 KHL regular season with nine points in 47 games. Rykov averaged 19:24 TOI/GP, which tied him for second on HC Sochi in average ice time among defenders with Nikita Shchitov and former NHLer Yohann Auvitu. Through the first two games of the KHL playoffs, Rykov is averaging 22:16 TOI/GP for HC Sochi.
  • Niklas Jensen (29th overall, 2011 Draft), who the Rangers still possess the rights to, scored 28 goals and notched 21 assists in 48 games for Jokerit this season. He finished fourth on the club in scoring despite missing 14 games. Jensen, 25, played seven games with the Rangers in the 2016-17 after being acquired from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Emerson Etem.
  • Defenseman Joey Keane (88th overall, 2018 Draft) now has 36 points and 87 PIM in 58 games in the OHL this season. Keane has played in 26 straight games with the London Knights without having a multi-point game. He has 21 PIM and 26 SOG in his last nine games.
  • Morgan Barron (174th overall, 2017 Draft) scored his 13th goal of the season against Union College on Feb. 23. Cornell University is 8-2-1 this year in the games in which Barron scores. The young center hasn’t gone more than one game without picking up a point since the start of December. /
