Rangers Radar: The Breadman is on a Roll

Artemiy Panarin can’t be stopped

It’s time for another installment of Blueshirt Banter’s Rangers Radar, where we focus the spotlight on trends in performance, production, and collect notes on players in the New York Rangers organization.

New York Rangers

  • Russian winger Artemiy Panarin has had two-point performances in five of his last six games and is currently riding an 11-game scoring streak. The last time Panarin failed to score in a game was during the Rangers’ 3-2 loss to the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 22. He leads the Rangers in goals, assists, and power play goals. /
  • After starting the season with six points in his first six games, including a three-point Rangers debut, defenseman Jacob Trouba has just a single point in his last dozen games. Trouba scored 50 points with the Winnipeg Jets last season. He has seven points in his first 18 games as a Ranger.
  • Czech center Filip Chytil has six goals in nine games to lead all members of the 2017 Draft in even-strength goals. Chytil is currently shooting 35.3%, which, needless to say, is unsustainable. His 8.12 Rel CF% (score and venue adjusted) at 5-on-5 leads all Rangers skaters.
  • Tony DeAngelo is ranked 10th in scoring among skaters who were drafted in 2014 and is first in scoring among defensemen from his draft class this season. DeAngelo has already established a new career-best for goals in a season (6). As of the writing of this piece, John Carlson, Roman Josi, and Dougie Hamilton are the only defensemen in the NHL with more goals than the Sewell, NJ native.
  • Center Brett Howden, 21, has points in three of the 18 games he’s played this season and has one point in his last 10 games. Thus far, Howden is averaging 15:41 TOI/GP. Howden’s -5.14 Rel CF% (score and venue adjusted) is the second lowest among Rangers forwards, ahead of only Kaapo Kakko./

Hartford Wolf Pack

  • The Wolf Pack are now undefeated in their last seven games, with a record of 3-0-0-4. Through the first 17 games of the 2019-20 season, the Wolf Pack have been handed just one regulation loss (11-1-0-5). It’s also worth noting that the Wolf Pack have the 27th-ranked power play in the AHL (11.6%).
  • Goaltender Adam Huska now has a .923 save percentage and a 2.07 GAA through 406 minutes of hockey in his second AHL season. Huska has yet to allow more than three goals in a game in 2019-20.
  • After playing in seven consecutive games without scoring a goal, veteran forward Danny O’Regan scored in back-to-backs for the Wolf Pack on Nov. 11 and Nov. 16. O’Regan now has 13 points in his first 17 games with Hartford. O’Regan had 48 points in 70 games with the Rochester Americans in 2018-19.
  • After picking up one point — an assist — in a nine-game window, Phil Di Giuseppe also scored in both of the Wolf Pack’s recent games against the Providence Bruins. Di Giuseppe has now matched his goal total from the 2018-19 AHL season, which he spent with the Charlotte Checkers and the Milwaukee Admirals.
  • Defenseman Joey Keane has points in six of his last seven games. He leads all AHL rookie defenseman in scoring (12) and is third among all Wolf Pack skaters in scoring, behind O’Regan and Vinni Lettieri./

Other Rangers Prospects

  • Cornell’s Morgan Barron (174th overall, 2017 Draft) now has 12 points in his first six games of his junior season. The Big Red are 6-0-0 to start the season and Barron is the team’s leading scorer.
  • Badgers defenseman K’Andre Miller (22nd overall, 2018 Draft) had a big series against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Miller picked up two assists in Wisconsin’s 3-0 win over Notre Dame on Nov. 15, and scored a goal in overtime to complete the two-game series sweep the next day. Miller now has four goals and three assists in 12 games played. He’s tied with Penn State’s Cole Hults for the goal-scoring lead among defensemen in the Big Ten./
  • Through 803 minutes of hockey in his senior season, goaltender Tyler Wall (174th overall, 2016 Draft) has posted a .944 save percentage for UMass-Lowell. Wall has a 1.72 GAA in 13 starts this year. Among goalies who have played at least 600 minutes, his .944 SV% ranks fourth in the nation and second among drafted goalies.
  • After scoring nine points in his first nine games of the season, Swiss defenseman Nico Gross (101st overall, 2018 Draft) has five points in his last 11 games with Oshawa Generals. Despite the recent drop in his production, Gross’ scoring rate per-game (0.70) is almost double what it was last year (0.36). He has more goals (6) than the rest of the Generals’ defensemen do combined.
  • Russian winger Vitali Kravtsov (9th overall, 2018 Draft), 19, has one goal and one assist in six games in the KHL with Traktor since leaving the Harford Wolf Pack. Kravtsov is averaging 17:45 TOI/GP and has put nine shots on goal. He’s failed to pick up a point in his last three games./
