Rangers Re-Sign Matthew Robertson to One-Year Deal
With the Rangers putting pen-to-paper with Braden Schneider over the weekend, the Rangers were down to two restricted free agents awaiting new contracts. That list now becomes one as the team has announced they have agreed to terms with defenseman Matthew Robertson on a one-year contract.
The 49th overall pick by the Rangers in the 2019 draft, Robertson was one of the organization's more highly coveted prospects within their system. Coming off his entry-level contract this season, Robertson has registered a career tally of 55 points across three seasons with the Hartford Wolf Pack. While he took a slight decline in his point tally this season compared to last, he was still among Hartford’s most consistent defensemen. He finished the year as one of their most offensive blueliners, third in assists, points and tied for third in goals.
While his road to the NHL, at least with the Rangers still isn’t as clear as they may have hoped it would be when they drafted him, this comes as an important bit of business specifically for Hartford. The organization is limited when it comes to defensive depth so not only will the Rangers have another call-up option if need be, but Robertson will have another season to prove capable of being that with the Wolf Pack.
Seeing as the extension only came as a one-year deal, this could be a prove it deal of sorts regarding his future in New York. Especially when you consider the fact that Brandon Scanlin seemed to leap-frog him in the depth charts, making his NHL debut before Robertson last season. Nevertheless, hopefully the young defender can have a bounce-back year of sorts in Hartford and can take that next step many folks were expecting him to take by now.
