Rangers Recall Bo Groulx, Assign Brett Berard to Hartford

With Filip Chytil's status against Vegas in question, the call up of Bo Groulx gives the Rangers more options at center.

In a bit of an unexpected move, the Rangers have decided to give Bo Groulx a look in the big leagues and as a result, have reassigned Brett Berard to Hartford.

Unfortunately, at Brett Berard’s expense, this transaction makes some sense with Filip Chytil going down with an injury. Between that and the Rangers claiming Arthur Kaliyev on waivers, there's more of a need for center depth on the NHL roster than a need for extra wingers right now. While Berard has been one of the bright spots for the Rangers through some quite dark showings, they would benefit more if Groulx is able to slot into a third line role in Chytil’s absence.

In 32 AHL games this season, Groulx has 11 goals and 18 assists on the season for a total of 29 points, quite close to a point-per-game pace. At 24-years of age, the former second round draft pack still has some upside and certainly has earned a look with the Rangers. Unfortunately, this could mean that the Rangers could be without Chytil for some time. On the flip side, it could also mean that Chris Kreider is close to a return.

Having just acquired Kaliyev on waivers, it makes more sense to give him a look, especially with consideration to the fact that Berard does not require waivers to go back to Hartford. Not to mention, with Kreider likely close to a return, Berard would be pushed back to a fourth line role which isn't the most ideal in comparison to top minutes in the AHL.
