The New York Rangers have recalled one of their highly coveted prospects in Brennan Othmann from the Hartford Wolf Pack. Additionally, it appears that Tyler Pitlick, who was an early exit during last night’s outing with Carolina, will be out week-to-week with a lower-body injury.

Othmann was a 16th overall draft pick by the Rangers back in the 2021 Entry Draft and has since become one of the more excitable names the team has in the system. In his two OHL seasons that followed his draft year, Othmann put up a very impressive 97 point season in 66 games with the Flint Firebirds and followed that up with 67 points split between the Firebirds and the Peterborough Petes. Many folks believed that Othmann was ready to make the jump to professional hockey after his 97 point season but because of his age, he was forced to spend another year in junior.

In his first professional season with the Wolf Pack, Othmann has put up 9 goals and 14 assists for a total of 23 points in 28 games. Here’s one of those assists from a game before the holiday break where Othmann made a nice play right off the face-off to feed Alex Belzile on an odd-man rush.

In his five preseason games with the Rangers at the start of this season, he registered two goals and looked quite comfortable at the NHL level. You could make the case that he was capable of making the team out of camp but the organization saw value in him spending some time developing in Hartford which was likely the best decision regarding the bigger picture.

With Pitlick coming out of the lineup, don’t be surprised if Nick Bonino slots back to the fourth line with Vesey and Goodrow leaving Brennan Othmann to slide to the right side of Will Cuylle with Jonny Brodzinski in the middle. Tomorrow will also be the first time the Rangers take on Connor Bedard which will make for an all-around exciting match up featuring two young talents.
