Rangers Sign NCAA Free Agent Goaltender Callum Tung to ELC
Tung posted a .933 save percentage this season for UConn with a 10-4-1 record as a starter, landing him Hockey East All-Rookie Team honors.

With the NCAA Frozen Four set—Penn State, Boston University, Denver, and Western Michigan—twelve other college hockey programs saw their 2025 postseason come to an end. And with that opens the opportunity for undrafted free agents to sign entry level contracts with NHL teams. The New York Rangers used this as an opportunity to address their goaltending depth as they have signed UConn goaltender Callum Tung to a 3-year ELC deal.

The 21-year old netminder from Port Moody, British Columbia, spent two seasons in the BCHL before heading to the University of Connecticut. In his two seasons of junior hockey, Tung spent just the second as a consistent starter. In 38 games played, he registered a save percentage of .917 with a record of 22-14-1. Just looking at the stats, it appears he could have a little Igor Shesterkin in him in the sense that he had two assists and two penalty minutes on his record as well.
His successful year in the BCHL was enough to land him a fringe starter role with the University of Connecticut where, in 16 games played, he put up an impressive .933 save percentage and averaged just two goals against. His record across those 16 games was 10-4-1. Tung led the Huskies into the NCAA tournament riding a five game win streak and had 21 saves in the opening round to help his team beat Quinnipiac 4-1.
Tung stood on his head against Penn State in the second round, taking his team to overtime where they would lose in heartbreaking fashion. Despite allowing three goals, he had 38 saves.
Beyond Dylan Garand, the Rangers goaltending depth is a little spotty, so it's certainly worth taking a chance on someone like Callum Tung. His ELC will begin next season but will join the Hartford Wolf Pack for the rest of this season on an Amateur tryout.
G Callum Tung went 10-4-1 with a .933 sv% and a 2.01 GAA with UConn as a freshman this season. He was named to Hockey East's 'All-Rookie Team' as a result.
