Rangers vs Coyotes: Rangers Continue to Fall with 5-0 Loss to Arizona
Following an embarrassing loss to the Colorado Avalanche, the New York Rangers continued the trend and gave up five goals yet again in a loss to the Arizona Coyotes. These last three games by the Rangers have been absolutely miserable, and this may be their worst stretch of hockey in the last couple of seasons. Defensively, they are completely out of sync and they are absolutely being pummeled in not only goals but also shot differential. Here is today’s goal breakdown.
1-0 Coyotes
Conor Garland (4) - Assists: Oliver Ekman-Larsson (18) & Alex Galchenyuk (13) - 7:19 1st Period
It didn’t take long for the Coyotes to take control of this game, as they held a 17-5 shot advantage throughout the first period. An undisciplined penalty by Brendan Smith sent the Coyotes to the power play, and they picked up the first goal of the came courtesy of Conor Garland. The point shot by Oliver Ekman-Larsson wound up deflecting off of Garland’s leg at the top of the crease and in behind Henrik Lundqvist.
2-0 Coyotes
Mario Kempe (2) - Assists: Josh Archibald (5) & Lawson Crouse (3) - 9:19 1st Period
Exactly two minutes later, the Coyotes doubled up their lead following a goal from Mario Kempe in the high slot. The goal came as a result of a broken play out of the corner, and following a scramble for the puck, Kempe snapped the puck over Lundqvist’s shoulder.
3-0 Coyotes
Conor Garland (5) - Assists: Nick Cousins (10) & Alex Galchenyuk (14) - 6:34 2nd Period
The Coyotes kept up their pressure later on in the second period, and Conor Garland picked up his second goal of the afternoon. This has become somewhat a trend for the Rangers as another fortunate deflection ended up in the back of the net for the Coyotes. Nick Cousin’s attempted shot found up being blocked, and then deflected off of Garland’s leg before entering the net.
4-0 Coyotes
Clayton Keller (9) - Assists: Derek Stepan (10) & Jacob Chychrun (5) - 15:12 2nd Period
The skill of Clayton Keller was put on full display with his ninth goal of the season after having his way in the offensive zone. Keller was able to fake Adam McQuaid down to the ice, circled around the net, and fired the puck through Henrik Lundqvist’s legs to make it a 4-0 lead for the Coyotes.
5-0 Coyotes
Alex Galchenyuk (7) - Assists: Jordan Oesterle (6) & Alex Goligoski (13) - 16:38 2nd Period
A little over a minute later, the Coyotes put up the five-spot on the Rangers coming off of another scramble in front of the Rangers’ net. Jordan Oesterle’s point shot gave Lundqvist some trouble and after bobbling the puck, Alex Galchenyuk was able to slam home the loose puck in the crease. Following this goal, Alexandar Georgiev came into the game in relief of Henrik Lundqvist, who was quite literally playing this game by himself the entire afternoon.
