Rangers vs Devils: Rangers Falter In New Jersey, Lose Second Straight
The New York Rangers dropped their second straight game this evening as they were defeated 5-2 by the New Jersey Devils. The Rangers were coming off of another extended break in their schedule, but they were unable to translate that extra energy into goals.
Here is tonight’s goal breakdown.
1-0 Rangers
Tony DeAngelo (1) - Pavel Buchnevich (3) & Brady Skjei (2) - 6:02 1st Period
With the Rangers having the fresh legs coming off of their break, they were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Brady Skjei’s point shot wound up being deflected in front by Pavel Buchnevich, and that left a loose puck right at the top of the crease. Tony DeAngelo was able to swat at the loose puck and tapped it under Mackenzie Blackwood for the opening goal.
1-1 Tie
Blake Coleman (3) - Travis Zajac (3) & Matt Tennyson (1) - 12:58 1st Period
Nearly six minutes later, the Devils stormed right back into the game with a fortuitous goal from Blake Coleman. Coleman broke in on a partial breakaway, and elected to get off a quick shot before the defender closed in on him. Coleman’s shot wound up going off of Alexandar Georgiev’s mask and deflected through his own legs to tie the game up at 1-1.
2-1 Devils
Kyle Palmieri (3) PPG - Unassisted - 2:18 2nd Period
Following a pretty soft interference penalty on Brady Skjei, the Devils made quick work of the Rangers right off of the ensuing faceoff. Kyle Palmieri was able to jump on the loose puck in the right faceoff circle, and sniped a shot just under the crossbar. Alexandar Georgiev was slightly off of his angle on the goal, but it was also a perfectly placed shot by Palmieri.
3-1 Devils
Miles Wood (1) - Jack Hughes (1) & Matt Tennyson (2) - 12:25 2nd Period
A little past the halfway mark of the second period, the Devils doubled up their lead with a double deflection in the high slot. Matt Tennyson’s point shot was deflected by Jack Hughes, which then redirected off of Miles Wood’s pants and in behind Georgiev.
3-2 Devils
Jesper Fast (1) - Ryan Strome (2) & Brendan Smith (2) - 2:22 3rd Period
The Rangers gave themselves some hope early in the third period as Jesper Fast slammed home a pass from Ryan Strome, and brought New York back within a goal. Just prior to the goal, Jesper Fast missed on a glorious chance in the high slot but he aired the puck just over the crossbar. Thankfully, Fast made up for it seconds later with Ryan Strome slipping a nice tap pass over to him.
4-2 Devils
Nikita Gusev (3) - Unassisted - 12:21 3rd Period
Just as a power play opportunity was expiring for the Devils, a broken stick from Artemiy Panarin gift wrapped a goal for the Devils. As Panarin was attempting a breakout pass, his stick failed him and the puck sat all alone for Nikita Gusev off to the left of Georgiev. Gusev quickly scooped up the puck and slid it through Georgiev’s five-hole to make it a two-goal game once again.
5-2 Devils
P.K. Subban (1) - Unassisted - 19:12 3rd Period
The Devils finally iced the game with a little under a minute remaining and picked up their first win of the season. Meanwhile for the Rangers, they will look ahead to tomorrow night’s matchup against the Washington Capitals.
