Rangers vs. Flyers: Rangers Close Out Preseason With 4-2 Win Over Flyers
The New York Rangers closed out their preseason schedule this evening, and did so with a feel-good win over the Philadelphia Flyers by a final score of 4-2. As we await the word on the final cuts and releases, here is tonight’s goal breakdown.
1-0 Rangers
Vinni Lettieri - Assists: Kevin Shattenkirk
Following a pretty mediocre first period, the Rangers finally got on the board at the 34 seconds mark with Vinni Lettieri’s second goal of the preseason. Much like his first goal, Lettieri was posted up in front of the net and he redirected Kevin Shattenkirk’s shot from just inside the blue line. Lettieri has made a strong case for a spot in the bottom-six, and this goal certainly helped that cause.
2-0 Rangers
Brett Howden - Assists: Jimmy Vesey & Jesper Fast
After being snakebitten for a majority of the preseason, Brett Howden finally notched his first goal and it certainly didn’t disappoint. Howden started off the scoring opportunity with a great defensively play to keep the puck alive, and the puck eventually worked its way over to Jimmy Vesey. Vesey fed Howden with a picture perfect pass right on the tape, and made it 2-0 Rangers.
3-0 Rangers
Vladislav Namestnikov - Assists: Kevin Shattenkirk & Kevin Hayes
The Rangers kept up their dominating second period performance and added yet another goal on the power play to take a commanding three goal lead. Kevin Shattenkirk’s presence on the blue line has been fairly evident throughout the preseason and this was another example of his excellent vision. He was able to find Namestnikov on the far side in a shooting lane, and Namestnikov absolutely wired the puck past Carter Hart.
3-1 Rangers
Ivan Provorov - Assists: James van Riemsdyk & Mikhail Vorobyev
Alexsandar Georgiev was able to keep the Flyers scoreless until the third period, but the Flyers finally broke the drought at 10:01 in the third period. The goal came as a result of a perfect setup by James van Riemsdyk as he placed a perfect pass right on the tape of Ivan Provorov. Georgiev didn’t stand much of a chance on the goal, and the Flyers were finally on the board.
3-2 Rangers
James van Riemsdyk - Assists: Mikhail Vorobyev & Radko Gudas
Nearly two minutes after Provorov’s initial goal, the Flyers quickly added another with van Riemsdyk’s first goal of the preseason. It was a bit of unfortunate luck for the Rangers as the goal wound up going off of Vladislav Namestnikov’s stick and slipped in behind Alexandar Georgiev.
4-2 Rangers
Kevin Hayes - Assists: Vladislav Namestnikov & Brendan Smith
Despite two quick goals by the Flyers, the Rangers were able to lock down defensively for the remainder of the game. Kevin Hayes finally iced the game with under two minutes remaining and gave the Rangers a victory in their final preseason game before the opener.
