Rangers vs Hurricanes: Rangers Hang On and Defeat Hurricanes 2-1
The New York Rangers knew they needed to be better after giving up six goals against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and they did just that tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes. Thanks to 43 saves by Henrik Lundqvist, the Rangers topped the Hurricanes by a final score of 2-1 with a third period goal coming from Vladislav Namestnikov.
1-0 Hurricanes
Jordan Martinook (13) - Dougie Hamilton (14) & Andrei Svechnikov (14) - 9:53 2nd Period
The Hurricanes were able strike midway through the second period with Jordan Martinook picking up the games first goal at the 9:53 mark. Dougie Hamilton created the entire goal after a give-and-go with Andrei Svechnikov, and fed the puck across to Jordan Martinook cutting to the net. After being denied on his first attempt, Martinook followed up his rebound and chipped it over Henrik Lundqvist.
1-1 Tie
Connor Brickley (1) - Filip Chytil (10) & Tony DeAngelo (15) - 10:40 2nd Period
Under a minute later, the Rangers jumped right back into the game as Connor Brickley registered his first goal as a Ranger. Filip Chytil’s shot on goal wound up popping up into the air, and as it came down, Brickley deflected the puck in off of his body. The initial call on the ice was no-goal, but after a lengthy review it was deemed a good goal.
2-1 Rangers
Vladislav Namestnikov (7) - Jimmy Vesey (15) & Pavel Buchnevich (11) - 6:10 3rd Period
Later on in the third period, the Rangers finally broke the scoreless tie with Vladislav Namestnikov giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead. Just as the power play was expiring, Tony DeAngelo made an excellent pass over to Pavel Buchnevich for a shot on goal. Vladislav Namestnikov was able to pounce on the loose puck and gave the Rangers their first and only lead of the evening.
Following tonight’s win over the Carolina Hurricanes, the Rangers will have a scheduled off day tomorrow before returning to action on Thursday night at home against the Minnesota Wild.
