Rangers vs Maple Leafs: Tony DeAngelo Scores Overtime Winner in Toronto

The New York Rangers picked up their second straight win of the weekend after defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 in overtime. Artemiy Panarin had yet another multi-point game after picking up three assists on the night, and assisted on Tony DeAngelo’s game winner in overtime.

1st Period

Brett Howden (5) - Ryan Strome (24) & Jacob Trouba (15) - 1:41 1st Period

It didn’t take the Rangers very long to jump out to the early lead in this game as Brett Howden picked up his fifth goal of the season. Ryan Strome made an excellent pass from the corner after getting the puck from Jacob Trouba, and placed a perfect pass over to Brett Howden. While receiving the puck, Howden pivoted into a shooting position and ripped a shot past Frederik Andersen to make it 1-0 in favor of New York.

William Nylander (16) PPG - John Tavares (18) & Auston Matthews (20) - 4:21 1st Period

Unfortunately, the Rangers’ lead would only last a little under three minutes as William Nylander picked up a power play goal. John Tavares made an excellent pass out from behind Alexandar Georgiev and put the puck right through the middle of the ice. William Nylander was able to beat Greg McKegg to the open lane and tied the game with a one-timer from the high slot.

Ryan Strome (9) - Artemiy Panarin (28) - 7:59 1st Period

Just about two minutes before the halfway mark of the first period, Ryan Strome put the Rangers back in front for the second time. Artemiy Panarin created the entire goal with a great defensive read on a errant pass from Pierre Engvall, and made a diving pass over to the far side of the ice. Ryan Strome made an excellent move to his backhand, and slipped the puck under Andersen.

2nd Period

Ryan Strome (10) - Artemiy Panarin (29)& Jesper Fast (8) - 4:37 2nd Period

Ryan Strome wasn’t done after his opening goal in the first period, and picked up his second of the night on another assist by Artemiy Panarin. Panarin made a great cross-ice pass through the neutral zone, and gave Strome some space entering the offensive zone. Rather than making a move to the net, Strome pulled up and wired a slap shot under the crossbar to give the Rangers a 3-1 lead.

Auston Matthews (25) - Mitchell Marner (26) - 7:48 2nd Period

About three minutes after Strome’s tally, Auston Matthews brought the Maple Leafs back within a goal at the 7:48 mark of the second period. A misplay by Jacob Trouba wound up putting the puck right on Mitch Marner’s stick, and he made a quick pass out to the high slot. Auston Matthews was camped in a perfect shooting lane, and blasted a slap shot past Alexandar Georgiev.

Mika Zibanejad (15) - Chris Kreider (13) - 17:05 2nd Period

After keeping the score close for most of the second period, Mika Zibanejad finally restored the Rangers two-goal lead with under three minutes remaining. A great defensive play by Chris Kreider gave the Rangers possession, and Kreider found Zibanejad breaking down the right side of the ice. Zibanejad collected the puck, pump faked in the right faceoff circle, and slipped the puck under Andersen after he bit on the initial fake shot.

3rd Period

Pierre Engvall (4) - Tyson Barrie (15) & Kasperi Kapanen (12) - 6:22 3rd Period

The Maple Leafs came out flying in the third period, and immediately scored to bring themselves back with a goal yet again. A forced turnover in the neutral zone gave Toronto a free entry into the offensive zone, and Kasperi Kapanen found Tyson Barrie entering the zone late after jumping off of the bench. Barrie’s shot from the point was deflected in front of the net by Pierre Engvall, and he beat Georgiev under the arm to make it a 4-3 game.

Auston Matthews (26) - William Nylander (17) & Tyson Barrie (16) - 19:07 3rd Period

With under a minute remaining in the game and the goaltender pulled for Toronto, Auston Matthews wired home the tying goal with 53 seconds remaining in regulation. Toronto was able to get a good cycle going in the offensive zone, and the puck eventually landed on Matthews’ stick for the shot. Matthews immediately fired a shot towards the goal, and the puck wound up deflecting off of Ryan Lindgren’s stick before entering the net.

Overtime

Tony DeAngelo (8) - Artemiy Panarin (30) & Ryan Strome (25) - 0:51 Overtime

Despite giving up the late tying goal, the Rangers shook it off and came out with two great plays in overtime. Artemiy Panarin made the first play after shoving Auston Matthews off of the puck in the corner, and allowed the Rangers to get possession. Almost immediately after, Ryan Strome found Panarin cutting up the ice and created a 2-on-1 rush with Tony DeAngelo. Panarin made a great no-look pass over to DeAngelo coming in on goal, and he shoveled the puck over Andersen for the game-winner.

After dropping the game on Monday against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Rangers have now picked up four points in a 48-hour span. Artemiy Panarin, Mika Zibanejad and Ryan Strome all had big nights in Toronto, and Alexandar Georgiev was spectacular in the crease once again. Following tonight’s overtime thriller, the Rangers will have two scheduled off days before returning to action on Tuesday night against the Edmonton Oilers.
