Rangers vs. Oilers: High Scoring in Edmonton Results in Repeat

Georgiev’s return to Edmonton saw a similar result as last time, a thrilling loss.

The last time these two teams met was on New Year’s Eve in 2019...so basically 15 years ago at this point. It was a thrilling 7-5 loss for the Rangers, and Georgiev hoped to wipe the slate clean on that one tonight. Unfortunately that was not the case.

1st Period

Filip Chytil (2) - Nils Lundkvist (2) & Sammy Blais (4) - 1:53

The game got off to an exciting start with a handful of odd-man rushes within the first two minutes, and ultimately it was Chytil who cashed in on a rebound from a shot by Blais that Oiler goaltender, Mikko Koskinen, strayed too far out to try and defend. He ended up defeating himself more than anything but Chytil was there to claim the point.

Zach Hyman (7) - Tyson Barrie (5) & Darnell Nurse (6) - 18:11

After 15 minutes of legitimately great defense by Georgiev and a lot of puck possession by the Rangers, Zach Hyman battled his way for one late in the period. Catching his own rebound, he was able to get one passed Georgiev without so much of a defenseman’s shadow in sight. The period ended soon after.

2nd Period

Kevin Rooney (1) - Filip Chytil (1) - 2:52

The third line came together for another goal early in the period. This time Chytil had a great pass up to Rooney who had a good angle at the net and just chipped it in. Scoring early was something massively important the Rangers needed to do and they proved they can in this game.

Chris Kreider (8) - Adam Fox (10) - 4:11

After Fox knocked the puck out of the air, he was able to send it up to Kreider who took to the right side of the ice to score his first non-deflection goal of the season and give the Rangers some breathing room.

Mika Zibanejad (3) - Ryan Strome (3) & Artemiy Panarin (9) - 4:11

After the first penalty of the game to Zack Kassian, Zibanejad capitalized on the power play and tacked on another goal for the Blueshirts.

Jesse Puljujarvi (4) - Darnell Nurse (7) & Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (14) - 14:41

The Rangers took to the penalty kill for the first time, something no one wants to do against Edmonton. A deadly power play unit paired with an awkwardly timed line change and Georgiev’s short side, Puljujarvi put one in.

3rd Period

Tyson Barrie (2) - Connor McDavid (13) &  Leon Draisaitl (12) - 1:00

Edmonton came out swinging early in the third period, with their top line combining for one that Georgiev just didn’t seem ready for. He actively moved to the other side of the net as the puck came toward him, like he didn’t know where it was at all. It didn’t take long to realize the Rangers were much more lifeless here than how they were playing early in the game.

Jesse Puljujarvi (5) - Duncan Keith (2) & Evan Bouchard (1) - 3:35

Puljujarvi sealed the deal on the comeback for the Oilers here with his second goal of the game . It didn’t take much longer for the frustration to turn physical. The tie game and altercation in the Oilers zone electrified Rogers Place.

Mika Zibanejad (1) - Chris Kreider (2) - 7:18

These two veterans were able to quiet down the loud atmosphere of the Rogers Place crowd by breaking the tie and giving their teammates a second to breathe. They seemed to settle down defensively after that but the Oilers were still heavily applying pressure and getting shots.

Connor McDavid (1) - Tyson Barrie (6) & Leon Draisaitl (13)  - 17:01

No matter the defense out there, they are simply no match for McDavid and he tied it up at 5 with three minutes left. All on his own, he recovered the puck and fought off four Rangers defensemen to score on the backhand. So basically, he did Connor McDavid things.

The Oilers only seemed to gain momentum and endurance from that point on, completely controlling play and having a ton of chances Georgiev managed to ward off. It wasn’t enough and time expired.

Overtime

Leon Draisaitl (10) - Darnell Nurse (8) & Connor McDavid (14) -  3:27

Edmonton carried their momentum right into 3-on-3 play in overtime. It was only a matter of time until they broke through the visibly tired defense and won it. Ultimately, it was McDavid with a sauce up to Draisaitl in point blank range for the win.

The Rangers will round out their west coast road trip in Calgary tomorrow (tonight) at 10 p.m. EST, with the expectation that Shesterkin will face Markstrom in net.
