Rangers vs Red Wings: Rangers Rebound With 5-1 Win Over Detroit
The New York Rangers rebounded from their poor performance against the Ottawa Senators and were rewarded with a 5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings this evening. New York jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead during the second period, and added two more goals in the third period. Henrik Lundqvist, who appeared in net for the first time in three games, stopped 28 of the 29 shots he faced and finished the game with a 0.972 save percentage.

The Rangers had some chances during the opening period of this game, but it wasn’t until the second period where they were able to break the scoreless tie. Tony DeAngelo picked up his fifth goal of the season on the power play after crashing the back post and slamming home a rebound. Brendan Lemieux created the entire chance with a great spin move to his forehand, and shoveled the puck on net to generate the rebound attempt.
Chris Kreider (3) - Pavel Buchnevich (8) & Tony DeAngelo (6) - 6:04 2nd Period

A little under two minutes later, the Rangers capitalized on another high quality scoring chance in front of Jimmy Howard. Pavel Buchnevich made an excellent pass across to Chris Kreider on the far side of the ice, which Kreider had plenty of time to pick his spot. After corralling the puck off of his skate, Kreider ripped a quick wrist shot over the shoulder of Howard and gave New York the 2-0 lead.
Ryan Strome (5) PPG - Adam Fox (3) & Artemiy Panarin (7) - 8:49 2nd Period

About two minutes after Kreider’s tally, the Rangers answered again with their second power play goal of the evening. Adam Fox’s point shot wound up deflecting off of Ryan Strome’s shoulder in front of the net, and dropped in behind Jimmy Howard. The Rangers were pouring it on Detroit at this point in the game, and the chances were certainly bouncing in New York’s favor.
Valtteri Filppula (2) - Andreas Athanasiou (6) & Anthony Mantha (6) - 9:41 2nd Period
After jumping out to a massive 3-0 lead, the Rangers fell back on their lead a bit and were caught napping through the neutral zone. Andreas Athanasiou absolutely burned Jacob Trouba through the middle of the ice, and created a 2-on-0 chance in close against Henrik Lundqvist. Athanasiou dished a quick pass over to Valtteri Filppula, who chipped the puck over a sprawling Lundqvist and brought Detroit back within a pair of goals.

With Detroit pressing during the third period, an ill-advised tripping penalty by Micheal Haley gave the Red Wings a chance on the power play. Nearing the end of the penalty kill, Greg McKegg made a great individual effort to skate the puck out of the zone and put a shot on goal. The shot, however, caught Jimmy Howard a little off guard and the rebound dropped right in the high slot. McKegg beat everyone to the loose puck and slipped it through Howard’s legs for his first goal as a Blueshirt.
Artemiy Panarin (7) ENG - Ryan Strome (8) & Marc Staal (1) - 17;23 3rd Period
The Red Wings pulled their goaltender with five minutes remaining in regulation and controlled the puck for nearly a full two minutes. Ryan Strome finally made a defensive play in the corner and found Artemiy Panarin cutting through the neutral zone. Panarin broke in with plenty of space and sealed the game with his seventh of the season.
The Rangers did an excellent job of rebounding from Monday’s poor performance against Ottawa and have now won three of their last four games. New York will be right back in action tomorrow night as they travel to Raleigh for a meeting with the Carolina Hurricanes.
