The Rangers dominated the Senators, holding them to only 14 scoring chances in the game. Oh yeah, and did you see that Matt Rempe goal?

  • Due to scheduling issues, Joe and I were recording the podcast through most of the game last night. I did have it on while we were talking, as you'll hear from me narrating the (annoyingly) successful coach's challenge to Arthur Kaliyev's second goal. So, most of these notes are from having watched the NHL's condensed game this morning. If you think I got something totally wrong, yell at me in the comments. But I feel pretty confident in the following observations. These are the things I do for you, the lovely readers.
  • If the Rangers still harbor playoff aspirations, and you know as a team they do, even if some of us on the outside recognize it's probably better for them miss the playoffs this year and reset themselves, this was a game they needed to win. Ottawa is presently in the first wildcard spot, and the Rangers need to beat those teams that are above them. They'll have another one of those games on Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers, who are currently tied with the Rangers at 50 points, but with the Rangers having a game in hand on them.
  • And they won. Convincingly. They held the Senators to an astonishingly low 20 shots on goal, 14 total scoring chances, and one (one!) high danger scoring chance. For as bad as the Rangers were defensively in the game against Montreal, where the Canadiens racked up 39 total scoring chances against, they absolutely smothered the Senators.
