Rangers vs. Stars: Rangers Fight Back But Fall in Overtime Against Dallas
The New York Rangers dropped their second straight game of the season this evening as they were defeated 3-2 in overtime. New York fell behind early in this game, but eventually found a way to fight back with goals coming from Adam Fox and Chris Kreider. Igor Shesterkin got the start for the home opener and turned aside 23 of the 26 shots he faced.
1st Period
Jacob Peterson (1) - Unassisted - 19:25
With under a minute remaining in the opening frame, a costly defensive mistake put the Rangers down by a goal heading into intermission. Nils Lundkvist was caught in no man’s land after failing to step up on a puck in the neutral zone, and his slight hesitation wound up burning him. Jacob Peterson was able to walk into the zone uncontested on his backhand, and flipped a sneaky shot under Igor Shesterkin’s glove to pickup his first career NHL goal.
2nd Period
Radek Faksa (1) - Miro Heiskanen (1) & Ryan Suter (1) PPG - 6:11
Dallas continued pushing early in the second period, and after an extremely undisciplined penalty by Ryan Reaves, the Stars went to work on the power play. Shortly before the penalty was set to expire, Radek Faksa was able to open up off to the right of the net. Faksa was able to corral his on rebound after a deflection attempt, and shoveled the puck past the outstretched Shesterkin.
Adam Fox (1) - Ryan Lindgren (1) & Artemiy Panarin (1) - 8:43
Despite the Rangers falling into a two goal deficit, the Rangers got right back on the attack and transitioned that into the best period of the young season. Adam Fox finally got the Rangers on the board at the 8:43 mark as his seeing-eye wrist shot somehow found its way through traffic. A fortunate bounce off of Esa Lindell’s leg was all the Rangers needed to swing the momentum, and they pulled back within a goal.
Chris Kreider (2) - K’Andre Miller (1) & Mika Zibanejad (1) - 15:54
Nearing the end of the second period, the Rangers completely took over in the offensive zone following their opening goal. New York kept getting pucks to the front of the net, and after numerous chances, were finally rewarded with the tying goal. K’Andre Miller started the play with a shifty move to get into space, and tossed a quick shot towards Braden Holtby. Chris Kreider was posted up at the top of the crease, and completely stunned the goaltender with a ridiculous deflection. Holtby never even caught a glimpse of the puck, and the Rangers jumped right back into the game with a dominating second period.
3rd Period

Overtime
Miro Heiskanen (1) - Jamie Benn (1) - 1:38
This game would need to be decided in overtime, and it didn’t take very long for the Dallas Stars to take advantage. A lackadaisical play by Artemiy Panarin through the middle of the ice led to a rush chance the other way, and Miro Heiskanen broke in all alone. Heiskanen was able to get off a quick shot just as Jacob Trouba closed in, and beat Igor Shesterkin with perfectly placed shot over the shoulder.
The Rangers had a tough start to the night, but they were able to turn the ship around after the opening goal and turned it into a point. It was a tough turnover by Panarin that led to the eventual game winner, and it’s certainly something you don’t want to see from one of your best players. After picking up their first point of the season, the Rangers will head out on an extended road trip that begins on Saturday night in Montreal.
