Rangers vs Wild: Rangers Come From Behind and Defeat Minnesota in a Shootout

The New York Rangers are slowly but surely inching their way up the standings, and continued that climb with another big win over the Minnesota Wild. The Rangers trailed by two goals heading into the third period, and were able to tie the game with 1:06 remaining in regulation. Mika Zibanejad and Artemiy Panarin both scored in the shootout on ridiculous moves, and gave New York their third straight victory.

1st Period

Ryan Donato (11) - Miko Koivu (13) - 9:49 1st Period

Minnesota jumped out to an early lead in this game courtesy of Ryan Donato, who burned the Rangers coming into the zone 1-on-3. Donato was able to corral the puck at the blue line, skated around Jacob Trouba in the high slot, and beat Georgiev with a sneaky quick backhand shot.

Artemi Panarin (29) - Tony DeAngelo (30) & Ryan Strome (35) - 11:52 1st Period

It didn’t take the Rangers very long to respond, and Artemi Panarin tied the game right back up at the 11:52 mark of the first period. Tony DeAngelo created the entire with a beautiful seam pass through traffic and put the puck right on Panarin’s stick. Panarin hesitated for a second and then finished off the play with a hard wrist shot that beat Alex Stalock just under the crossbar.

Jonas Brodin (2) - Jordan Greenway (16) & Matt Dumba (16) - 16:43 1st Period

Unfortunately, the Rangers’ lead with only last a little under five minutes as Minnesota came right back down the ice and regained the lead. The Rangers were caught on the ice during an extended shift, and Jordan Greenway made the Rangers pay with a hard fought play below the goal line. Greenway was able to shovel a pass out to Jonas Brodin in the high slot, who absolutely hammered a slap shot over the shoulder of Alexandar Georgiev.

2nd Period

Jordan Greenway (7) - Jonas Brodin (22) & Joel Erikson Ek (18) - 17:53 2nd Period

Jordan Greenway made his presence known again late in the second period, and doubled up Minnesota’s lead heading into the second intermission. The Rangers actually had good coverage during Minnesota’s zone time, and a great individual effort by Greenway led to the goal against. Brady Skjei had body position in front of the net, but Greenway reached out and around to get his stick on the puck, and was able to deflect the puck over the goal line.

3rd Period

Pavel Buchnevich (12) - Unassisted - 11:51 3rd Period

New York came out on a mission early in the third period, and were generating chance after chance in the offensive zone. Finally, following a broken play in the high slot, the Rangers drew within one with a little over eight minutes remaining. Pavel Buchnevich picked up his 12th goal of the season after spinning a shot on net, and deflected the puck in off of two Wild players. It was an unusual goal, but they all count the same on the score board and the Rangers were due with the way they were pressuring.

Mika Zibanejad (24) - Artemiy Panarin (47) & Adam Fox (24) - 18:54 3rd Period

The Rangers eventually completed the comeback with 1:06 remaining in regulation, and Mika Zibanejad’s 24th of the season sent this game to overtime. Artemi Panarin’s absurd vision gave the Rangers a chance in this game, and he setup Mika Zibanejad with a perfect centering pass from along the left side boards. Zibanejad was able to get a slight deflection on the puck and slipped the puck past Alex Stalock, who picked up the puck late coming through traffic in front.

Shootout

After neither team was able to end the game during the overtime period, this game headed to the shootout. Mika Zibanejad started the shootout off with a ridiculous move to his backhand, while Alexandar Georgiev forced Ryan Donato to lose the puck on his attempt. Artemiy Panarin followed up Zibanejad with an unreal goal of his own, and gave Alexandar Georgiev a chance to seal the game. The 24-year old goaltender did just that, and with a little help from the crossbar, gave the Rangers two massive points in the standings.

Following tonight’s come-from-behind win, the Rangers will close out their road trip with one final stop tomorrow night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
