Report: Matt Beleskey to be sent to AHL, will not be in training camp

Beleskey will be buried in Hartford

The writing is already on the wall for veteran forward Matt Beleskey.

Larry Brooks of the New York Post reported last night that the Rangers are sending Beleskey directly to the AHL and that he will not participate in training camp.

Beleskey starting the year in the AHL is by no means unexpected, but the fact that he will not participate in camp or be on the roster for the preseason is a little surprising. It’s worth noting that he injured his shoulder playing in last year’s preseason and subsequently appeared in four regular season games. Since coming over in the Rick Nash deadline blockbuster on Feb. 25, 2018, Beleskey has played in just five games for the Rangers.

As per CapFriendly.com, this move won’t be made official until Sept. 20, the first day that teams can place players on waivers. When he gets buried in the AHL, Beleskey will carry a cap hit of $825,000, which is significant because he carries a cap hit of $1.9 million on the main roster as a result of Boston retaining half of his salary.
