Report: David Quinn Has Passed COVID Protocol, Expected to Coach on Sunday

David Quinn has cleared the NHL’s COVID protocols, and will be in Washington where he’s expected to coach on Sunday for the Rangers’ game vs. Washington according to Rick Carpiniello of The Athletic.

The Rangers’ bench boss last coached on Monday March 15, a 5-4 overtime loss vs. the Flyers, and since that point has sat out while Hartford Wolf Pack head coach Kris Knoblauch has served as acting head coach. The Rangers’ bench also included Wolf Pack Associate Head Coach Gord Murphy and Associate General Manager Chris Drury while the regular coaching staff remained in the COVID protocol. Jacques Martin and Greg Brown cleared the protocol before Quinn, and have been back with the team.

Since Quinn’s been sidelined — although he did stay in constant contact with Knoblauch regarding lineups and such — the Rangers went 4-2 with a 9-0 victory over Philadelphia, a 3-1 victory over Washington, a 5-3 victory over Buffalo, and an 8-3 victory over the Flyers on Thursday.

The Rangers’ upcoming schedule will see them play on Sunday vs. the Capitals, off on Monday, return home to MSG to play the Capitals on Tuesday, off on Wednesday, play Thursday at Buffalo, off on Friday, and play again on Saturday vs. the Sabres. The Rangers currently sit in sixth place with 34 point in 33 games, five points back of the fourth place Boston Bruins who have 39 points in just 30 games played.
