Given what we’d heard about the Rangers’ coaching search, this news isn’t all that surprising. The front office was looking for a candidate with experience, and Gallant certainly will bring that to the Blueshirts.
In terms of who Gallant is as a coach, and what can be expected, I will refer you to the story I wrote a month ago on why he should be the team’s next head coach.

While Gallant represents an upgrade over David Quinn, ultimately the Rangers’ biggest upgrades this season will have to be players on the roster. It is clear that there’s an appetite to improve talent in the top six, there’s players who may become expendable given their contract situation, and prospects who could have an impact via joining the roster, or as a trade asset.
With a new coach in the fold, next steps will involve adding new assistants on the bench, adding some hires in the front office, and finalizing a list of logical targets to improve the roster. Action tends to pickup as more teams are eliminated, and with the Stanley Cup Semifinals underway, and the Cup Final just around the corner, I’d suggest buckling up for what’s going to be a bumpy offseason.
